Yellow and black radioactive symbol with 'Rn'.

WHAT IS RADON?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. It’s colorless, odorless, and tasteless, which makes it especially dangerous because you can’t detect it without proper testing.

WHY IS RADON A PROBLEM?

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, according to the EPA and WHO.  When radon is inhaled, it decays into radioactive particles that can get trapped in the lungs. Radon can seep up from the ground into buildings, especially basements and lower levels, where it can build up to unsafe levels over time.

HOW CAN RADON ENTER YOUR HOME?

Radon can enter into a house through:

  • The cracks in floors and walls
  • Gaps around pipes, wires, or sump pumps
  • Crawl spaces with exposed soil
  • Construction joints
  • Well water
